Megan's Multimedia Portfolio
Videos
From the Winter of 2009 to the Spring of 2011, I was enrolled in the Multimedia Design Program at the local Community College. I took all sorts of fun classes in those two years, including: photography, lighting, video production, audio production, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash, and Algebra (gotta love those gen ed requirements). These pages hold my ever-growing and oh-so-entertaining portfolio. This particular page is where you can find all the videos I've made (or in some cases, helped to make).
I recently graduated from Community College with an Associates Degree in Multimedia Design, and am currently pursuing a Bachelor's in Film at Portland State University. Since this program is more academic than hands-on, and doesn't seem to offer many opportunities to work on creative projects (especially this early in the game), it's hard to say when my next project will happen. Though, being the creative person that I am, I know I won't be able to hold off for too long. So, stay tuned.

"Aww, Nuts" (Concepts of Visual Literacy)
This was a group project I did for the very first multimedia class I ever took in college. The assignment was to find a visually entertaining and creative way to tell the story of a person who is faced with a door (whether literal or metaphoric), that they're not allowed to enter. Though they resist the temptation at first, they eventually give in, and well, you can watch for yourself to see what happens.
Since this was an entry level class, we were only allowed to use still photography. So don't worry, your computer is not running slow. It's just a slide-show. :)

"I'm Open" (Introduction to Drawing)
The goal of this midterm project was to present 15 drawings in a uniformed, creative, and unique way. I chose to do illustrations for a spoken word/song by Pearl Jam.

"Nutmeg Media Productions website commercial" (Operating Environments: Macintosh)
This class was all about learning what a Mac can do, and this particular project was meant to give us experience making a slide-show with iPhoto. I decided to turn mine into a commercial for this website. Figured I might as well get some free advertisement along with that A I earned. :)

Project 2 (Audio Production 1)
This was a blast to make. We were given a list of vintage TV commercials from the 50's and 60's, told to pick one, then had to remove and recreate all the audio. For the commercials containing voice overs, we were given permission to change the script, if we so desired. *evil laugh* :)

Total Soundtrack Reconstruction - Boogie Nights (Audio Production 1)
This project was similar to project 2, in that all the sound had to be removed and recreated. Unlike project 2 however, this clip is 3 full minutes long, and it was a LOT more complicated. All the audio - from the dialog to the music to every little sound effect you hear - had to be replicated "convincingly". In order to be successful with this project, we had to: find talent to do all the ADR work, and direct them; search for sound effects and music online, making sure not to violate any copyright laws; go out in the field to record sounds, and spend time in the studio doing Foley work; and spending just about every minute we could spare in the computer lab putting the whole thing together in Pro Tools. It took about a month to complete.
You definitely want to watch this one in full screen... and preferably with headphones.

Untitled (Fundamentals of Lighting)
This was another group project I helped create. The goal of this one was to tell a story with lighting. The story was supposed to be about a warehouse worker that gets attacked by a thief. The thief then tries to steal some merchandise, but gets caught by the cops before he can make his escape. We decided to take some liberties with the script to make it more interesting and, in my opinion, I think we succeeded. What do you think?

Gag Reel (Fundamentals of Lighting)
I love bloopers almost as much as I love editing, so while I was putting together the final project for the lighting class, I decided to cut together some bloopers and outtakes as well. This was a lot of fun to make, and it's even more fun to watch. :)

Project 1 - Basic Camera Techniques (Video Production 1)
This was just an exercise in basic camera work. It was assigned to give us a foundation in using a video camera, and to try and get a feel for panning, tilting (both with and without a tripod), zooming, framing, shooting from different heights, using different fields of view in a sequence, and using an on-cam microphone vs. an external one. We weren't required to tell a linear story with these various camera techniques, but being a natural storyteller, I did anyway. :)
Keep in mind, this is my first project for this class, and I only had about an hour to shoot it, so it may seem a little rough.
If you want to watch it in full screen, knock yourself out.

Project 2 (Video Production 1)
Project 2 consists of a simple follow shot, more practice with various fields of view, a 5-shot sequence with audio, and a multi-shot sequence with no audio.
This is only the 2nd project, so things are still a little rough, but getting better... I think.

Project 3 - The Quick One (Video Production 1)
One day, upon arriving to class, we were split into groups of 3, given a basic story idea, and released on campus to shoot a one minute movie. Each person in each group had to shoot their own version of the story, which gave us each about.... 25 minutes to get everything we needed. Hence "the quick one". This was a crazy day, but a lot of fun, too.

Final Project - "Story of My Life" (Video Production 1/Audio Production 2)
This is one of the things I'm most proud of when it comes to my multimedia projects. It's my first real student film! This was hastily shot and edited (hence all the continuity errors) in the Spring of 2010, and then revised that summer to fix some audio issues. This is the final version.

Project 1 - Dynamic Sports Edit (Video Production 2)
For this project, we were given some sports footage, and asked to create
a montage incorporating music and as many special effects we could fit
in. It was a chance to give us some time to play with Final Cut Pro; to
see what all it is capable of. Most students did something really
flashy and loud, or goofy and silly. I decided to go a different
route. I was worried it would be TOO different, but I got a lot of nice
feedback, as well as a good grade, so no regrets here.
Oh, and for some reason all the football clips play back really choppy, instead of smooth. It was due to some glitch in Final Cut that neither myself or my teacher could figure out.
Anyway, here is the full screen version.

Project 2 - "A Day in the Life of My Feet" (Video Production 2)
The goal of this assignment was to create a story using music given to
us by the teacher, and visuals of our choosing. I chose to use a
Photography project I did the previous summer called "A Day in the Life of My
Feet". Since these were still images and not moving video, I wanted to
try to bring the images to life with lots of effects and transitions.
This gave me a chance to really delve into Final Cut Pro, as well as
LiveType, which are both amazing programs. I had a lot of fun with this
one. :)
It's much more fun to watch in full screen.

Final Project - "Exodus" (Video Production 2)
This story is about a man who is trying to grab the moon with his hand. Everyone around him keeps telling him that not only is this possible, but it's necessary for his happiness. Of course, it can only be done if he believes strongly enough. Will he be successful?
From conception to final export, this took about five weeks to complete. It was exhausting to produce (in large part because of the heaviness of the gear, and my lack of an assistant). But I'm happy with how it turned out... for the most part. The audio is bad about a minute in, and there's a few other things I would change if I could. But hey, it could be A LOT worse.
Big thanks to Jesse for being such a good sport. Also big thanks to For a Minor Reflection for the use of their music. :)

"Hints, Tips & Tricks" video game tutorials (Multimedia Production 1)
This is a series of videos I produced called "Hints, Tips & Tricks". Each video shares some helpful or interesting information for one of a handful of NES games. If you didn't already know this about me, I <3 Nintendo. :)
"Womp" (Multimedia Production 1 & Music Technology: MIDI/Audio 2)
From the depths of my lumpy, gray brain comes... Womp. It's unclear
whether the predicament that Womp faces here is a frequent occurrence,
or just a one-time anomaly. Either way, he finds a way to overcome and
carry on.
This was a short Flash animation I created in a Multimedia Production class in the Fall of 2010. Unfortunately, time ran out before I could do any sound for it. Fortunately, I was able to use this footage for a "put audio with video" assignment in my MIDI 2 class in the Winter of 2011. :)
Please watch this in full screen. Otherwise, you may miss out on a ridiculous detail or two.

"An Introduction to Moodle" (Winter 2011 Internship)
This was my term project for my first internship. I was asked to create a video showing new students how to use Moodle. Moodle is the website you use when you take an online class, or just about any class at this school. I used Flash for all the drawings and animations; Photoshop for the screen-shots, icons, and text; Final Cut to edit the thing together; and Pro Tools to add the sound effects and VO. I enjoyed this process, as it allowed me to apply my knowledge of all these programs I've been learning about the last couple years to a project that will not only entertain, but educate a lot of people.
Here it is in full screen.

Time Lapse Photography from Eugene, Oregon (Multimedia Production 2)
After watching The Mountain, from Norwegian photographer Terje Sørgjerd, I was inspired to try my hand at time-lapse photography. This is the result.
Oh, and the background music is an original piece I wrote and performed specifically for this video. This'ns all me, baby! :)

Adventures in Narnia Promo (Spring 2011 Internship)
While interning at Stafford Video one day, I was approached by my boss and told that he had "volunteered my services". About 15 minutes later, two clients from the Hosanna Dance Studio came in to talk to me about a project they had in mind. Basically, they wanted me to take footage from a performance they produced the year before, and cut together a two minute video to promote the current year's performance. The interesting thing about this project was that I dealt directly with the clients with no oversight from my boss. I was honored that Mr. Stafford trusted me enough to take the reigns on this one, and my confidence increased upon seeing how pleased the clients were with the final product. Overall, this was a great experience.

"Smiley McFaceFace Vs. Paula Dean" - Project 1 (2-D Animation)
This is a short animation I created in Adobe Flash for the first project in a 2-D Animation class. The assignment was to animate a ball with three different properties: bouncing like rubber, falling like stone, and floating like it's full of air. I went a widdle above and beyond what we were required to do, but I figured since I already knew Flash pretty well, I might as well have some fun with this. And oh, did I ever. :)
When I find the time, I'll add some sound effects, titles, and maybe a different ending, as well.
In the meantime, please check out the full screen version on YouTube.

In case anyone is wondering...
Final Cut Pro was used for the editing on all projects for Video Production.
Windows Movie Maker was used for "Aww, Nuts", the drawing midterm, and the lighting project/gag reel.
iPhoto was used to make the website commercial.
And both audio projects were created on Pro Tools LE.
